ETE 10806 Introduction Environmental Technology

Lectures:
The various application fields of environmental technology are discussed: solving environmental problems from the past such as polluted soil and sediments (remediation technology); application of environmental technology in production processes, including also prevention technology; solving the environmental problems associated with waste caused by the products at the end of their life cycle (waste treatment technology).
The sustainability of specific environmental technologies is discussed such as: - biological wastewater treatment for municipal or industrial wastewater for compounds like organics, nitrogen and sulfur;

-          remediation of polluted soil and sediment;

-          gas treatment.

Special attention will be given to mass balances and reuse of the waste components.
Practicals:
The practicals illustrate the theory of several environmental technological processes. By doing laboratory investigations on aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment and soil remediation, students get acquainted with practical aspects of environmental technology. By doing the practicals, students acquire basic knowledge and practical skills of several environmental technological applications and the accompanying analytical techniques.

ETE 20310 Environmental Project Studies

The main element of the subject is a group wise study of an environmental topic from professional practice. During the 4th period, a research plan is composed, while the research is conducted mainly during the 5th period. The research work consists of literature research and/or empirical studies (measurements and interviews). Approximately one fourth of the time is spent on the theory and the ethics of science, particularly of environmental science. In this part of the subject, students will be introduced to philosophical questions connected to current scientific practice. A training in the methodology of research and project management helps in writing the work plan and conduction the research. Practical training in information literacy and interview training strengthen students' capacity of finding information and conducting interviews respectively. The research is reported according to the rules of scientific report writing. The subject pays due attention to the societal aspects of the researched topics, the role of science and the development the students' own view on the approach of environmental problems.

 

ETE 21306 Water Treatment

This course deals with the most important processes that can be applied for the treatment of wastewater. These processes can be based on three principles: biological conversion of pollutants, physical removal of pollutants and chemical destruction of pollutants or combinations of these processes. The aim of wastewater treatment is to obtain a water quality suitable for discharge in surface waters or for the recovery and reuse of valuable products.
The course focuses on biological processes for removal of organics based on aerobic or anaerobic processes and on removal of nutrients (N and P) by biological (or chemical) processes. Attention is paid to kinetic models used to describe the biological processes in a reactor as a tool for design, prediction of the performance and for parameter estimation. The physical/chemical processes settling, membrane filtration, ion exchange and adsorption are also dealt with.

 

ETE 21806 Soil Remediation and Solid Waste Treatment

The topic of this course are the techniques and methods, that can be applied for the remediation of soil and the proper management of wastes. Principally the purpose of these techniques is to neutralize the harmfulness to the environment and if possible reuse of the treated waste and soil.

The remediation of the soil is directed at the destruction of the pollutant or concentration in further treatable, limited amount of polluted soil. Both in-situ as well as ex-situ techniques will be discussed. The treatment of the organic wastes can be directed to the removal or destruction of toxic or harmful components present in the waste, or to the regaining of useful elements from these wastes. The main processes considered are incineration, composting and digestion. Attention will also paid to the treatment of the off-gases.

 

ETE 80903 Design Tools

The topic of this course deals with design tools that can be applied for simulation of processes in the area of environmental technology and for the development of technological solutions for environmental problems. The course focuses on the basic aspects of these tools and the way to use these tools in simulation models of processes and process chains and in flow sheeting. Also practical and theoretical calculations with these tools and assessment of the results of these calculations are part of this course.

 

ETE 80909 Bachelor Completion Environmental Technology: Analysis, Design and Evaluation

The student makes a design study in the field of Environmental Technology. The design tools, learned in "Bachelor Completion Environmental Technology I: design tools" will help the student to integrate previously acquired knowledge and skills in the design study. The design is made on an individual basis and the topic is chosen from a number of cases on offer. The design must satisfy both technological and societal needs and thus the evaluation will contain both elements. The resulting design must be presented for an audience.

 

ETE 81324 BSc Thesis Environmental Technology

The BSc thesis is the culmination of the Bachelor study programme. The student independently addresses a topic, usually by doing research within an ongoing research project. It is possible to make your own research proposal or conduct research that involves other chair groups.
